The painting has been constructed from circles, squares, organic forms and gestural marks that coexist within an open pictorial field. Each element retains its own identity while responding to the presence of others. Rather than organising the composition through hierarchy or predetermined order, I allow the work to develop through continual negotiation. Forms approach, withdraw, overlap, interrupt and accommodate one another, creating a visual language in which relationships become the primary subject of the painting.
My interest in nature comes from a similar understanding. A tree appears to us as an individual entity, yet beneath the visible surface it participates in complex systems of exchange and interdependence. The forest reveals a different understanding of individuality: existence is not necessarily separation, but participation within a network of relationships. Fragile butterfly wings could create a tornado if there was enough of them at once.
